Is this necessary to cut back liriope every spring ?

It is not necessary but homeowners and landscapers often trim liriope in late winter early spring to remove old-looking and tattered foliage. Time the pruning for just before new growth has started. The trimmed foliage is usually a good candidate for your compost. For more lirope questions and answers visit:  Lirope.
