I am in the process of purchasing a new home and have heard a lot about home inspections. What is a home inspection, and why is it necessary?

Home inspections are inspections of a home, adjacent structures, and property conducted by a licensed inspector. During a home inspection, the inspector checks the mechanical, electrical, and structural elements of your home from roof to basement. Home inspections are typically paid for by the buyer. Although they are an added expense (often $250 to $1,000, depending upon the location and exact services provided) to the home-buying process, they are well worth the initial investment. The sales contract can be contingent on the outcome of the home inspection. We would like your feedback on this Personal Finance Frequently Asked Question.
