How do I start a wildflower meadow?

Last Updated: January 07, 2008

Getting a wildflower meadow established is not as easy as it may seem because there are invasive weeds that need to be controlled. Here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Broadcast chemical weed control is out of the question. It would end up killing your plantings. Weeds will need to be removed by hand.
2. It is a lot of hard work and takes a lot of money.
3. Start small and expand if you’re successful.
4. Do not use “wildflowers in a can” mixes because they don’t typically do as well.
5. Results won’t be immediate. It can take up to seven years to have a fully established meadow. Three to four years is typical.
