Multicolored lady beetles usually fly to homes to overwinter the first or second warm day after temperatures have approached freezing. Check with your local Extension service website to see when the beetles typically fly in your area.
The best way to keep lady beetles out of your house is by preventing entry, conduct the following steps before the beetles fly to homes:
- Seal entry points around doors, windows, and eaves by using door sweeps and caulking any cracked areas
- Keep window screens intact, screen vent openings, etc.
- Apply a fast-acting residual insecticide and target around windows, doors, eaves, attic vents, and any other entry points when lady beetles are active. Before using any pesticide, make sure to read and follow the label instructions.
If the beetles are already in your home, one of the most effective ways to remove them is to use a vacuum cleaner. You should empty the vacuum bag or container often, because dead insects will rot and produce an unpleasant odor. If you do not want to use a vacuum cleaner, a broom can be used. However, keep in mind that if you use a broom, you can stain curtains, upholstery, walls, ceilings, and other surface areas, because lady beetles produce a yellowish defense secretion when threatened.
