There are many possibilities for producing agricultural products on small acreages. These range from fruits and vegetables to small ruminants (goats and sheep) and poultry. One of the first things you must do is to be sure that your are located in an area that allows agricultural production or the raising of livestock and poultry. You can find out this by checking with your county’s zoning office. You also need to determine just how much investment – both financially and time – you are going to be able to put into the operation. Fruits and vegetables offer the greatest return but can be very risky and have a moderate to high front-end investment. However, returns can begin the first for vegetables. Livestock requires some time, but the returns take longer and are usually lower. You can utilize “on-farm” marketing to increase your profits both all of these enterprises. You may also be able to establish contacts with local ethnic markets to provide food items that are not readily available at local markets.
