Castrating early after birth reduces stress, but steer calves will weigh less than bull calves at weaning. Castrating at weaning can be done but the procedure is stressful and will cost you weight. As a result, calves will need to be retained for some time to regain the lost weight. When castrating, keep procedures sanitary and control flies.
