Prophylactic treatment with penicillin, along with vaccinations of two vaccine doses at two-week intervals, is a recommendation in outbreaks to kill the bacteria that are possibly active in muscles and to prevent it from killing more calves. However, the stress of exertion from working the calves may trigger recrudescence of blackleg latent, non-active infections, and cause deaths from new active bacteria.
