There is a vaccine available for bluetongue for goats, sheep, and deer. The vaccine for deer includes EHD as well as for bluetongue. Check with your state veterinarian to see if the state you reside in has an approved vaccine. The bluetongue virus is transmitted by little biting midges called Culicoides. They are blood feeders and spread the pathogen that causes the disease by biting an infected animal and then biting a uninfected animal. Culicoides prefer areas where there are water sources. You can contact an entomology specialist within your state's Cooperative Extension Service to get more information.
