There are over 100 causes of sudden death in livestock, with many regional differences in disease prevalence. Therefore, it is very important that any time an animal dies a necropsy is performed. Many times a necropsy provides a specific diagnosis. Other times, it gives clues as to the cause of death. Without clues from necropsy findings, much time and money can be spent on diagnostics, such as blood tests. Meanwhile, more animals may die. A veterinarian can use the necropsy findings along with history, environmental findings, and physical examinations to try to more accurately and quickly diagnose causes of sudden death.
