Chewings, hard, slender-creeping red, and strong-creeping red fescues have excellent shade tolerance. Unfortunately, these species are not very tolerant of heat. The fine fescues often perform best in shade at higher elevations and in cooler regions of the state. Many varieties of improved, turf-type tall fescue tolerate light, open shade, or moving shade. Although more tolerant of shade than Bermudagrass, zoysiagrass turfs often thin or die as the level of shade increases.
