Why are my tomatoes cracking?

Tomato fruits will crack when there are fluctuations in the growth of the tomato plant. For example, dry weather (minimal irrigation) followed by more than ample rainfall or irrigation will cause cracking. Growers usually see cracking in dry weather when rainfall is uneven. Cracking can be a varietal issue. Typically large fruited varieties tend to crack more than small fruited varieties.
