I have some red pine seedlings in containers,will they survive if left outside in containers through the winter months?

The potted trees won't survive in pots over winter unless the pots are sunk into the soil. Another method that growers of trees and shrubs and some garden centers use for winter protection of their extra stock is to water them well in late fall, lay the pots on their sides, cover them with a foot or more of hay and then pull plastic over the area.
