All perennial plants need some special management in the late summer to ensure that good levels of food reserves are stored for overwintering and next year’s growth. There is documentation that cutting alfalfa in during this “hardening” period reduces subsequent production and plant counts and speeds up encroachment by weeds and the incidence and severity of crown diseases. For short rotations, this is not an issue, but for long-term stands you should pay attention to this issue.
