How much mulch should I use around my landscape plants?

Mulches should be applied 2 to 3 inches deep and should not touch the stems of woody plants; you should leave a small area around the stem unmulched. Lightly break up existing mulch before remulching to avoid crusting of the mulch underneath. The diameter of the mulch ring around trees should increase as the tree grows. Mulching to the drip line of the tree is best to reduce competition to the tree from turfgrass.
