You can be suspicious of lead poisoning if you have unexplained deaths among animals that have been exposed to lead sources. Common lead sources include paint and automotive batteries. Affected animals may stagger, have muscle tremors, develop blindness, or bellow. Convulsing animals often die. The signs of lead poisoning mimic many other diseases, including rabies, so it is important to have an accurate diagnosis. Diagnosis of lead poisoning requires testing tissues such as blood or liver. If you believe that your animals have been exposed to lead, or are suffering from lead poisoning, contact your local veterinarian.
