There are two factors that predispose calves to navel ill: 1) unsanitary calving areas and 2) inadequate absorption of colostral antibodies. Prevent cows from calving in a dirty, wet environment such as corrals. If at all possible, have cows calve in uncrowded, clean pastures. You can possibly also move the feeding area often to help prevent the buildup of bacteria where the calves lie down. If cows must calve in unsanitary conditions, treat the navels of the newborn calves with strong iodine (7% tincture of iodine). You can also administer colostrum via an esophageal feeder to newborn calves to ensure adequate ingestion and absorption of colostral antibodies.
