What is a cord of wood? What factors should I consider when buying wood?

Last Updated: October 05, 2010

A cord is a stack of wood measuring 4 feet high, 4 feet tall, and 8 feet long.

Cords of firewood are often sold as seasoned (thoroughly dry) and split. Each piece of firewood in a cord is usually cut to be 16 inches long. Delivery and stacking may increase the cost. When buying firewood, consider that green or freshly cut wood does not burn well and produces more creosote, the tarlike goo that can build up inside a flue or stovepipe and eventually become a fire hazard.
