There are a few things to keep in mind when turning cattle out onto a harvested cornfield. First is the experience of the cattle in feeding in a cornfield. Naive cattle are best to deter sickness because cattle must learn how eat the corn. When first placing cattle in the field, make sure cattle are not hungry; the afternoon after a morning feeding may be the best time. Also, acclimate cattle by taking them on and off the cornfield. If more than 10 bu/acre of corn are left on the field, cattle may eat too much, leading to ruminal acidosis. If excess corn is present, give hay to the cattle to provide an alternative food source, and decrease the amount of time cattle are in the field.
