Parents should read to children whenever possible. Literacy learning begins early in children’s lives. Children’s early literacy experiences occur in real-life settings in which they see literacy being used for meaningful purposes. Adults play a key role in the development of children’s understanding of written language. If experiences and materials are available, children’s early involvement with written language is both self-initiated and self-directed. Reading and writing develop together. They are interactive and interrelated processes.
