How do we get started in showing livestock as a part of the 4-H club program?

Livestock projects are great for teaching responsibility and can be a rewarding experience. To get started with an animal project, you would first need to decide whether you want to work with small animals (rabbits, goats, sheep, poultry) or large animals (horse, beef, dairy). Do you have the land and housing to support the animal(s)? Do you have the finances to purchase the species you are interested in, and are you able to buy feed and show supplies? For the shows associated with 4-H, there are possession dates by which the 4-H'er must have the animal in his or her possession. With breeding animals, the registration papers must be in the 4-H'er's name by a specific date. Possession dates for each animal species vary by each state. Consult your local Cooperative Extension office for additional information.
