The quantity of forage grown depends on moisture and fertilization. Generally, it takes two acres to maintain a single horse year round. On five acres, you could keep two to three horses. If you have more than three horses, you will need to limit graze your horses (two to three hours per day).

To grow the maximum forage, you should soil test and fertilize accordingly. Additionally, nitrogen fertilizer should be applied every six weeks during the growing season for maximum growth. Irrigation will be needed if adequate rainfall is not received. You may also want to consider a winter pasture such as rye grass, wheat, or winter oats.
