It has been proven through a number of research trials that replacement heifers should have a body condition score of six (1 = emaciated; 9 = obese) when they calve. They should be kept at this condition after calving in order to ensure that they will return to estrus and breed back on time. A body condition score six heifer will have a small amount of fat in the brisket. You will not be able to see the outline of any ribs; however, you will be able to see the outline of her hip and pin bones. The key to identifying a condition score six is the ribs. You shouldn’t be able to see any ribs showing.
