With the addition of Boer goat genetics in this country, the interest in meat goat production has been ignited. What is different from other animal species that we have seen come and go in boom and bust cycles is that there is an established market and infrastructure for this industry essentially already in place. The United States is an importer of goat meat to meet the growing demand from several expanding ethnic populations. Markets have been in place, often in conjunction with sheep markets, to sell wethered dairy goats and Spanish goats. Equipment for goats is available from many of the same suppliers that service the sheep industry. Meat goats are also being recognized in non-traditional parts of the country for their ability to improve pasture and range management, through their preference for different types of plants. The goat’s preference for coarser forage and browse allows landowners to gain value from undesirable plants and aid in their control.
