Why is continuous no-till better than tilling a field every two to five years?

No-till farming develops a good soil structure, encourages earthworm populations, increases organic matter, and reduces erosion by water and wind. Tillage, which inverts the soil layer or otherwise stirs the soil and buries most crop residue, will immediately cancel much of the benefits from the previous years of no-till cropping. Strip-till and non-inversion subsoiling are usually acceptable modifications of no-till.
