Most coyotes in suburban/urban areas avoid people, although they occasionally take pets (especially house cats). Attacks on people are very rare, with most incidents occurring in the southwestern United States. In the majority of cases where a coyote has bitten a person, the incidents were preceded by people feeding coyotes. Signs that coyotes are becoming habituated include more activity during the day, increased occurrence in backyards, and an indifferent or aggressive behavior toward people.
