What are the fescue toxicity signs in livestock?

Last Updated: September 22, 2006

Some of the fescue toxicity signs are reduced feed intake, decreased weight gain, lower milk production, higher respiration rate, elevated body temperature, rough hair coat, more time spent in water and/or shade, less time spent grazing, low blood serum prolactin concentration, excessive salivation and lower reproductive performance. Specifically in horses, reproduction difficulties in mares may include abortions, prolonged pregnancy, foaling problems that can result in foal and/or mare deaths, thick or retained placentas, and agalactia (little or no milk production). Fescue foot and bovine fat necrosis can also occur.
