Color of the branding iron determines how hot a branding should be for proper application. A black iron is too cold; a red iron is too hot. An iron that is the color of grey ashes is the proper temperature and will produce the best brand. Using an ash-grey colored iron, allows the iron to roll with the shape of the horse's body part exerting equal pressure so all points of the brand make contact. A proper brand should be the color of saddle brown leather when the iron is removed. The time required to produce this saddle brown color should only be three to five seconds.
