What is causing circular black spots about the size of a penny or larger on my maturing cabbage heads?

This is Alternaria leaf spot, a fungus (Alternaria spp.) favored by cool, rainy weather.  Alternaria can infect cauliflower, Brussel sprouts and broccoli crops.  It is spread by splashing water and can be controlled with fungicidal sprays.
