After recent rains, my cantaloupes began to rot, and a white fungal mat formed around the base of the decay. What causes this and how do I prevent it?

This is southern blight (Sclerotium rolfsii ). The control measure is mulching between the fruit and the soil. Heavy soils will be more prone to this problem than light, sandy soils. Waterings should be light and quick, so the soil does not stay wet for long. Chemicals do not prevent southern blight.
