I want to plant tomatoes, hot peppers, and bell peppers, but I have had a problem with birds. I put up netting, but this didn't help much. Someone told me to try a yellow tomato.

The only permanent way to deal with bird damage is exclusion. Netting should work, but it must be "bird-proof" and "tomato-friendly." You might want to check out a product like Grow-Web. Monitor daily for birds getting caught in or under the net.
Birds will peck ANY color of tomato. Some people have tried putting tomato-size red Christmas ornaments next to the green tomatoes before they ripen. The idea is the birds will be fooled into thinking you are growing the hardest, worst-tasting tomatoes and not even wait around for the green ones to ripen! We've not heard whether this works, but given the food sampling behavior of many animals, don't bet the bank on this solution.
