What is the difference between hay and straw when used for mulch?

Hay is harvested grass crops that contain both grass and weed seed. Peanut hay is an exception. Straw results from threshing a grain crop, such as wheat. It is better to use clean straw  for mulch and avoid all the seeds in hay.
