"Good drainage" means that the plant's roots do not stand in water-saturated soil for several days after a rain or after being watered. Poorly drained soils can be avoided by planting on a raised bed, or berm. It can also be avoided by adding soil amendments (organic matter) to the existing soil to improve internal drainage. Such amendments will also improve drainage in soil in the raised bed.
