This sounds like the acorn of the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa). This oak has a normal height of 60 to 80 feet with a 30- to 50-foot spread. It has huge leaves, 6 to 10 inches long and 4 to 5 inches wide, and is native to the eastern United States.
