I have heard about hardy geraniums called "Cranesbills." My sister has them in Bakersfield, California, and she says they are great in cold weather. Do you know of them?

This information is specific to Texas and may or may not be applicable to your area. The Cranesbills are true perennials in the genus Geranium while most of the plants that we know as geraniums are genus Pelargonium. Nurseries that carry large quantities of perennial plants will have Cranesbills. It is likely that Cranesbill geraniums will do much better in Bakersfield than they will in Texas because it does cool off at night there more so than Texas in the summer. They need to be planted in a location where they are protected from the extreme heat of the afternoon sun in the summer. They do quite well in the winter months, not blooming but remaining evergreen.
