What is the best way to secure landscape timbers when building raised beds? The timbers are 3 1/2 inches thick.

While you could use 6-inch-long nails, a better choice would be to drill a 3/8-inch hole through the timbers where they intersect and drive a piece of concrete reinforcing bar (rebar) through them and into the ground. All builder's supply stores sell both the rebar and an extension that you can use to extend the length of the drill bit.
