I plan to move chrysanthemums to a row in my vegetable garden and rig up a row cover so I can control the photoperiod and subsequent bloom. I will move them to the flower beds in the fall. Should I put the mums in pots and sink the pots in the garden?

If you are willing to do the work involved in what you suggest, it is an excellent solution for control of photoperiod and blooming. Keep the chrysanthemums in pots (6 inch minimum), which will allow you to move them without causing transplant shock. This technique is used in many public gardens and commercial areas to provide color throughout the growing season.

Use clay pots to better keep roots from drying out. Consider using drip or soaker irrigation to lessen disease problems.
