The best time to cut scion wood is in late January or early February. The wood must be totally dormant when cut or it will not store well or stay dormant after grafting to the tree. The best method for scion storage is simply to cut it and place it in a Ziplockā„¢ bag without added moisture. Then place the Ziplock bag in the refrigerator crisper. The wood needs to stay at about 34 to 36 degrees F, but never frozen. The ideal grafting times are usually late spring to early summer, when new growth starts and the bark is slipping. Contact your local Cooperative Extension office for more information on grafting pears in your area.
