I am unable to grow cucumbers or lettuce in my garden. Soon after the sprouts appear, they disappear. Although I haven't seen any insects, the cucumber's two starter leaves appear to be devoured, leaving only the stem. What do you suggest?

It could be slugs or snails. Do you see slime trails in your garden? Perhaps a trip out to the garden after dark, equipped with a flashlight, would enable you to determine what pest is causing your problem. If it is slugs, snails, or sow bugs (roly-polies), there are baits that you can use to control them. Just read and follow the label instructions. A physical barrier can also be erected by cutting out the bottom of a paper cup and slipping the cylinder over the new seedling. Once the plants are larger, rip away the paper cup barrier.
