How do I tell when the Sugar Baby watermelons are ripe? We have several that are about 10 pounds.

Because they are about the right size, begin checking the ground spot or the area that has been in contact with the soil. If the melon is ripe, this area should be a dull, creamy-yellowish color. Also the tendril on the stem nearest to where it is attached to the fruit should be dried and withered when the fruit is near full maturity. Finally, when thumped with your hand, an immature watermelon produces a ringing sharp sound, whereas, a ripe one produces a hollow, dull sound.
