Figs are generally suited to warmer climates but it is usually possible to overwinter figs in USDA hardiness zones 7 or 8. In the cooler zones they will need special protection measures. Mounding or mulching with some type of organic material is the best way to protect figs from winter weather. Leaves, hay or wood shavings are all good materials. The point is to try and save as much of the wood (branches) as possible as the first crop of figs will be produced on this wood. The mound of mulch holds in the heat from the ground and traps it around the plant. After you cover with mulch, you may want to cover that with the burlap, not plastic. Plastic would allow for a heat build up in the mulch and could cause premature budding. The burlap and mulch needs to be removed after the last killing frost in the spring.
