I have two mountain laurel plants that have grown too large for the space they're in. Can I prune them in January? How much can I cut away?

January is the time to prune mountain laurel and you can cut them as much as you want — all the way to the ground. If you want to fashion them into a low bush, see if you can cut them just above a low-growing sprout and/or remove the longer stems to the ground and allow shorter-growing stems to remain rather than hedging the plant at a certain height.
