Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

I have a very small indoor hydroponics garden. I am currently growing jalapeno peppers, and I am wondering if I need to go to any extra lengths to pollinate the flowers. I read that the peppers are"self-pollinating."

Peppers, like tomatoes, are self-fruitful and self-pollinating in nature. However, greenhouse conditions cause sticky pollen which needs a little "encouragement" to ensure that the pollen shatters. Vibration or shaking of the open blooms will help the pollen move from its position below the stigma (area to be pollinated) in order to complete the pollination process.
