Chemical weed killers (herbicides) offer the best and safest method of control for poison oak (Toxicodendron pubescens, Atlantic poison oak, Toxicodendron diversilobum , Western poison oak). Control of broadleaf, woody plants can be achieved with a selective, brush killer type herbicide (Triclopyr). It will control many woody pests, including poison ivy, poison oak, honeysuckle, and kudzu, without harm to grasses. Consult your Extension office for additional information and read and follow all pesticide label recommendations. Always use herbicides on a calm day when no wind is blowing, and never allow the spray to contact desirable plants. Poison oak is a woody plant and control may require multiple applications, several weeks apart.
