I'm looking for a fast-growing shade tree that would tolerate my Texas shallow soil. I have heard good things about a Texas ash, and that the Fan-Tex ash is a cross between the Texas ash and the Arizona ash. What are the pros and cons of this tree?

The Fan-Tex ash is a variant of Arizona ash, which was selected by Fanick's Nursery in San Antonio. It is a male selection, so it doesn't have the messy seedpods of a female. Go ahead and plant a good tree such as a chinkapin oak, Texas red oak, or a Monterrey oak. All of these will grow in your soil, and given proper care, will grow quite rapidly.
