I am growing eggplants in an "earth box" (container garden). There are small eggplants. Can I expect them to be as big as those sold in grocery stores, and if not, how do I know when they are ripe?

As long as the plant gets the required water and fertilizer, the plants will produce fruit typical of the variety of eggplant you purchased. That may be as large as you commonly see in the store. Eggplant can be harvested at any size but should not be allowed to turn dull colored or yellowish.
