Interseeding perennial grasses into older alfalfa stands or with stands to be used as horse hay can extend both the grazing and haying potential of the pasture. Some of the more suitable grasses for interseeding with alfalfa include orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue (nonendophyte), kernel festulolium (a ryegrass by tall fescue type), timothy, and even matua prairie grass. These grasses tend to compete favorably with alfalfa but provide a good grass-alfalfa mix that is palatable. The fescues are more aggressive and over time will more quickly take over the pasture than the other suggested grasses.
