Most states and many local governments require licenses and permits to operate a business. In certain situations, the federal government may also require you to obtain a license or permit. Operation of your business will most likely require one or more licenses to operate legally. An important source of information regarding local licenses and permits is your local economic development agency or chamber of commerce. Additionally, the SBA hosts a Web site that lists contact information as to where to obtain licenses for every state. To see what is required in your state, go to: SBA license list
