The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides North America up into zones that depict the average annual minimum temperature that can be expected in that zone. Plants, which have a minimum temperature at which they can survive, are then classified using those zones. For much more detail see the Hardiness Zone Map at the U.S. National Arboretum Web site.
