When I phone a potential child care program, what should I ask?

Your initial phone call gives you an opportunity to learn more about the program and begin deciding whether it might be a good fit for your child.

At the very minimum, here are some good questions to ask:

  • Is the child care program licensed or registered with the state? If not, why not?
  • What experience, education, and training do the child care providers have? Do they attend training throughout the year?
  • Are the staff certified to perform first aid and CPR?
  • How much staff turnover occurs during a typical year?
  • What are the hours of the program?
  • What is the cost per week or per month?
  • Are slots available now? If not, what is the waiting period? Is there a particular time when you need to apply for your child to be in the program?

Ask for a copy of the child care program policy handbook. This information will tell you what the program believes is important and how they do business. After you review the child care program policy handbook, take time to write down additional questions. These questions may center on how the day is scheduled and what activities are planned, how teachers guide and discipline children, and any issues that were not fully explained in the policy handbook. If you are interested in the program once you have spoken to the director by phone, schedule a visit.
