There are many good books on the subject. Two to consider are:

"National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers" (Eastern Region)
This book has an easy-to-use format by color and form of flowers.

"Perennials for Minnesota and Wisconsin"
Lone Pine, publisher
Don Engebretson and Dan Williamson, authors
This book has wonderful color photographs of the plants, and includes size and care information.
